  7. The SQL Toolset is made up of two components:  The APT Workbench and Data
  8. Workbench.  APT Workbench provides a set of Application Productivity Tools
  9. (APT) for designing, prototyping, building, and maintaining forms-based
  10. applications, specifically as in the following examples.  APT-Edit is a visual
  11. forms editor for designing and implementing customized window-based forms,
  12. menus, and associated processing logic.  Also, APT-SQL is a powerful,
  13. easy-to-learn 4GL used to define logic and processing for forms created with
  14. APT-Edit.  APT-Build is an automatic application generator for building
  15. multitable prototypes or applications.  APT-Build produces APT-SQL code that
  16. can be used as a standalone application, incorporated into a larger
  17. application, or modified and extended by the application designer.
  18. APT-Execute is a standalone run-time environment for applications developed
  19. with APT Workbench.  Data Workbench provides a set of tools and utilities that
  20. facilitates decision support, ad hoc queries and reports, and database
  21. administration.  It is an interactive visually-oriented tool that can be used
  22. effectively by novices, as well as by more sophisticated programmers.  The
  23. Visual Query Language (VQL) allows users to compose and run complex SQL
  24. queries with a pick-and-point visual interface.  VQL automatically presents
  25. appropriate joins among the columns of two or more tables.  It eliminates the
  26. complexities of multiple selection criteria, sort orders, and aggregation.
  27. VQL can also serve as an interactive learning tool, since as the VQL query is
  28. built, the corresponding SQL statement is displayed on the bottom portion of
  29. the screen.  For the sophisticated user, the Data Workbench SQL facility
  30. allows developers to compose and run SQL queries and to define store
  31. procedures, triggers, and integrity rules in Transact-SQL.  The Data Workbench
  32. was built with the user in mind, with the attention to detail that makes the
  33. difference between a product that is usable, and one that seems designed to
  34. make life difficult.
